Roland Ratsiraka

Iarovana Roland Ratsiraka (born August 15, 1966) is a Malagasy politician.
Born in Antananarivo, Roland is the nephew of former Président Didier Ratsiraka. He studied both in Madagascar and in France, before founding several companies.
In 1996, Roland's uncle appointed him Director of Propaganda for the Tamatave region. In 1998, he founded the regional political association Toamasina Tonga Saina, and was elected to the National Assembly of Madagascar as a Deputy for Toamasina. In 1999, he was elected as Mayor of the city, and although the post was suspended in 2002, he was re-elected in 2004.
Ratsiraka stood in the 2006 presidential election, held on December 3, and he placed third, with approximately 10.1% of the votes cast, according to official results. In his home province of Toamasina, he won about 34% of the vote, two points less than the winner of the election, incumbent president Marc Ravalomanana. Along with second place candidate Jean Lahiniriko, Ratsiraka said that the results were false, and on December 11 he filed a challenge with the Constitutional High Court regarding the election.

C'est ce qu'a tenu à promettre le président Marc Ravalomanana lorsqu'il a rencontré hier à Toamasina (voir article ailleurs) l'opposition et les notables locaux. On dirait que l'opposition locale s'est déclarée satisfaite de la rencontre avec le chef de l'Etat. D'abord, c'est le président de la République qui a lui-même confirmé que si la ville de Toamasina se trouve dans son état déplorable actuel, c'est pour des raisons purement politiques. Ensuite, plus d'un concluent que le Président Marc Ravalomanana n'a tendu ses mains à l'opposition tamatavienne qu'après avoir jeté en prison le maire de la Ville Roland RATSIRAKA, son adversaire lors dernières présenditielles.
On a pénalisé la population entière pour la haine d'une seule personne. Et enfin, pour bon nombre d'observateurs, ce geste du chef de l'Etat qui intervient à quelques semaines des Législatives du 23 Septembre est dicté par des calculs politiques. « Pour moi, ce n'est pas un véritable raiamandreny ! », a réagi un observateur local.
